It used to be that when you talked about talking to yourself, people looked at you like you're nuts. Sometimes they still do. Reality is that everyone does some sort of self-talk. Maybe it's not actually talking, it could be pictures. Regardless, we all have some inner dialogue.

It's absolutely fascinating how some people talk to themselves. The crap they say. That's what I get most. People usually call it self-esteem. People with great "self-esteem" rarely think to themselves, my I really have great self-esteem- don't I? It's not exactly a state of being. It's, well, a state of "doing". Like, wtf are you doing or not doing to feel good/bad? For a lot of people it's really negative self-talk. They don't even notice it.

ever go to the store and some parent has a kid ("mom. mom. mom mom mommm mooooommmm!") incessantly babbling at them? And the parent is just numb from the constant verbal barrage  of need? well, we get that way kinda but with our own self-talk.  And when it says negative crap, we feel negative. or like crap.

Anyhow, I got rid of that a long time ago. But I had another inner voice that I call my inner-whiner. Yah, it complained about stuff. Lately though it is rather quiet. All day, every free moment I have, I ask myself: what's most valuable to do right now?

What is Most Valuable To Do Right Now? Instantly I get one or 2 items to do. Sometimes a list. But mostly just 1 or two things.

If I get stuck, like something comes up that I don't feel like doing, guess what I ask myself. What is the most useful feeling to have right now?

So, if you're in the habit of talking to yourself- especially asking questions like "what if...?"- then I suggest you try out my 2 favorites:

what is most valuable to do right now? what is most useful to feel right now? Those two questions have a way of cutting through all the crap.
